What Is Trend Following in Financial Markets?

The idea behind trend following is simple. Financial markets digest all available information, so prices are well-informed. When prices are rising, conditions are likely to improve, and there is an increase in demand for the shares. This strength in price often happens ahead of the news, and the role of the trend follower is to get on board ahead of everyone else. Some trends soon fizzle out, but others can go on to generate outsized gains, and that is where we focus our attention.

One of the key advantages of trend following or momentum strategies is their low correlation with traditional investment strategies. That makes them complementary to an index or fundamental strategy. They are adaptable and change with market dynamics and structural shifts in the economy and have historically led to excellent long-term performance.

Momentum Can Be a Market-Leading Strategy

We have built two distinct research services to deliver our best insights to you. One is focused on a small group of the best and worst ETFs to hold, and updates monthly, while the second goes into full detail on a universe of 2,000+ stocks, updating weekly.

Our Investment Research Services

The Adaptive Asset Allocation Report (AAA) focuses on geographic trends and identifies the four strongest ETFs to hold each month. It uses a complex, proprietary model to determine trend strength in the ETF universe, meaning that you're always moving in sync with the markets. It covers a range of equity sectors, geographies, and other assets like bonds and gold, and also looks to the short side, highlighting the weakest trends in the investment universe. This monthly report was initially designed for professional asset allocators but is now available for private investors who want to stay on the right path.

It is run by City legend Robin Griffiths and quantitative analyst Rashpal Sohan FRM, who deliver compelling and insightful coverage about the direction of financial markets alongside the recommendations.

Global Trends Investor (GTI) focuses on individual global equities with coverage of the world’s 2,000+ largest stocks. The service generates timely signals highlighting strong, emerging, weakening and bearish trends. This is vital information for investors that keeps them at the cutting edge of what's actually happening in markets, ignoring narrative. The report is published weekly by ByteTree’s founder, Charlie Morris, and quantitative analyst, Rashpal Sohan FRM, with a commentary describing the key changes in global stockmarkets.

In a typical week, you would be presented with many new trends in each of the four categories. That will vary according to market conditions, as sometimes they come thick and fast, whereas at other times, all is quiet. The team highlight both the emerging and the weakening stocks and reflect each using ByteTrend scores. ByteTrend Scores are important because they are designed for trend followers, as they describe a chart succinctly. If a chart has a score of 5, that is bullish, and 0 is bearish. Knowing what the 5s are at any given time gives you an edge.

The strong trends are very important. These can be the best of the best because, using a running analogy, they have proven their ability to win races. On the other side, the bearish trends are well established underperformers. The service also includes numerous valuable tables, e.g. market strength by sector and country, alongside selected charts to contextualise the data we are seeing. This helps you visualise the trends within financial markets.

We publish a weekly report on the trends from the top 200 stocks in the GTI universe, and this is freely available to all. You can sign up here. This report highlights interesting situations with brief commentary. It is useful for stock ideas, but it is also a quick guide to understanding what is driving the top end of the global stockmarket.

The full GTI universe of over 2,000 stocks covers both developed and emerging markets and goes beyond the biggest names to identify the lesser-known companies that are breaking up or down or trending strongly below the radar. It is a spreadsheet with no commentary that covers the entire 2,000-stock universe. It is a must-have for advanced investors.
